A woman who appeared in the Spanish Town RM Court on March 30, 2015 before RM A. Nembhard incurred the anger and wrath of the judge when she pleaded guilty with explanation for stealing water.

“Your honour, my father had a $120,000 outstanding bill and I couldn’t get any work so my neighbour was assisting us with water,” the woman explained.

“How old is your father?”

“He was 73 your honour and died recently”.

“And how old are you?”

“44 your honour”.

“Madam you see the expression on my face. I don’t believe anything you are saying. So what you are saying is not recorded in my head. You are just filled with excuses,” RM Nembhard sternly outlined in a high pitched voice.

“You will have to pay that outstanding bill. You are a grown woman not a teenager. The law says the maximum I can charge you is $10,000 and that is what you will pay or six months in prison,” the judge ordered.

The woman however kept explaining and begging for leniency, a tactic that just served to provoke the judge further. She remarked: “Sergeant, take this woman downstairs before I change my mind and send her to prison instead of paying a fine”.
