The racing car fraternity is in mourning following the death of 30 year old motorsports driver Daryl King who was pronounced dead at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, St James, on Thursday night.

The Cornwall College graduate went to see the movie Furious 7 with friends when the incident transpired.

“King went to the movie with fellow racer Maurice Whittingham and other friends that night. After a while King went quiet as if he fell asleep. They then tried to wake him but were unsuccessful at which time they rushed him to the hospital,” one witness said.

King, who had a heart problem, had taken a break from the sport because of health reasons.

“At one point, King was battling with pneumonia which was brought on by the CHIK-V last year. His liver was getting yellow at the time, but with God’s help he was able to recover. He also competed in a race last month at the Badda Badda raceway where he did well. This showed his love and dedication to the sport,” said Rerrie.

King began his racing career in 2006 and won numerous championships.

In January of this year, King was a big winner at the Montego Bay Motoring Club’s (MBMC) Prize Giving at Pier 1 as he took home the two biggest awards — the Sprint Championship and the overall title of MBMC Rallysport Champion.

King was also the 2013 Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club/Driver Rallysport club rally sport champion.
